After a one-year break, the XV Edition of the Festival Violoncellistico Internazionale Alfredo Piatti will be held in Bergamo in the afternoons of November 14 and 28, in Bergamo, in Sala Piatti.
Thanks to the very high level of the performers and the refinement of the proposed programs, the Festival is now considered a point of reference by cellists from all over the world. Alfredo Piatti, in fact, despite being a composer not particularly well known even to those who usually attend concerts, is an undisputed ideal point of reference for cellists, as much as Paganini is for violinists.
His 12 Capricci op.25 are universally considered the final stage in the course of study, not only for their extreme technical difficulty but also for the genius of their compositional invention. In addition to Capricci, Piatti also composed two Concerts and a Concertino for cello and orchestra, six Sonatas, fascinating variations on opera themes, delightful short pieces for cello and piano, and also a vast series of compositions for voice, cello, and piano, on texts in Italian, English, French and German. All compositions of which, over the years, also thanks to the Festival, cellists and the public have discovered the beauty.
Participating in the Festival and performing in public, in some cases for the first time, the compositions of Alfredo Piatti, for the youngest performers, is a very important milestone, because it often paves the way for a prestigious international career. But even for great performers, participating in the Festival is a moment of great satisfaction, because the perfect acoustics of the Piatti Hall offers them the opportunity to express their artistic personality to the fullest.
The performance of Alfredo Piatti’s compositions almost always requires the interpreter a great mastery of the instrument, but also great artistic maturity. For this reason, the performers called on the stage of the Sala Piatti must always be of the highest level, not just technical.
The performers selected as for the 2021 Edition by the artistic director of the Festival, the cellist Andrea Bergamelli, will be Federica Castro and William Vitali – cello and guitar (14/11) and “On the Bridge” Cello Ensemble – cello quartet (28 / 11).
The performers who will participate in the Festival were asked, as always, to include at least one of Alfredo Piatti’s compositions in the program, possibly combining it with compositions for cello belonging to the lesser-known repertoire, by authors from all over the world and from every era. On November 14th they will be offered to the public compositions by Bach, Burgmüller, Gnattali, Piatti, Kaufmann, Piazzolla, on November 28th by Corette, Forino, Franchomme, Piatti, Fitzenhagen.
At the beginning of the concert on November 14, a short lecture by the musicologist Annalisa Barzanò will present the figure and work of Alfredo Piatti.
The starting time of the concerts was confirmed at 4.15 pm, because it was verified that this time slot, in addition to favoring the participation in concerts of elderly people and families with children, is particularly appreciated by foreigners who take the opportunity of the concert to spend a weekend in Bergamo.
Admission to the concerts is free from 3 pm, but it is mandatory to wear a mask and present the green certification according to current legislation.
